Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty), is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breast, by inserting an implant behind each breast. A breast implant is a silicone shell filled with either silicone gel or a salt-water solution known as saline. The breast implant may be inserted directly under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle.
There are a number of reasons for breast augmentation: women with asymmetrical breasts may use a single breast implant to balance the difference in size, or breast cancer victims can use breast implants for reconstructive purposes after mastectomy. Following pregnancy, many women opt for breast implant surgery to correct reductions in breast size resulting from fluctuating hormones. And of course many breast implant candidates are simply interested in creating a more flattering contour.
Breast augmentations can greatly improve one's personal appearance and self-confidence but, as all surgical procedures have risks; before breast augmentation is performed the surgeon must weigh the benefits versus the risks of surgery.
Before the breast augmentation surgery takes place there will be certain pre-surgery precautions and procedures that must be followed as instructed by the surgeon. Based on your health conditions, including any preexisting problems, the plastic surgeon would properly instruct you on how to prepare for breast augmentation.
Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure that is usually performed under a general anesthesia. Local anesthesia is an option as well, the proper type of anesthesia for the breast augmentation procedure will be decided by your surgeon. The average operating time can range from one to two hours.
During the breast augmentation procedure, your surgeon will make an incision and create a "pocket," or space, within your breast tissues. The breast implant will be placed in the pocket, filled with saline and properly positioned. Stitches are used to close the incisions, which may also be taped for greater support. A gauze bandage may be applied over your breasts to help with healing.
Most women have some swelling, bruising, and soreness in their breasts for several days after the breast augmentation procedure. Stitches are removed from the breast augmentation incision on the 10th day. You will have scars after breast augmentation surgery, but these are usually in well-concealed areas and fade after several months.
